Applications for 2008Students can apply by sending their solutions to the five problems contained in the PDF document below. Students are expected to attempt the problems on their own in their own time. The solutions submitted must be entirely the student's own work. Solutions should be sent by post, not by fax or email. Students should NOT be expected to attempt the problems under time-constrained conditions at school. Selections are made in October. Invitations and enrolment forms are sent out in November. These students are completing five years in the ECU Program. They started in Primary 1 in 2004 and have progressed through all five levels. Mathematics
Problem Solving for Able and Gifted School Students
Introduction
Edith Cowan University offers year-long programs for mathematically able and gifted school students. The classes are held after school during term time throughout the year on the Mount Lawley campus of the University.
The programs are for students aged 10 to 15, though exceptional students of a younger age can apply. For students aged 13 to 15 the programs are linked to the Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians, a national program of the Australian Mathematics Trust.
ECU Tables Tester
This is a software package to help students achieve high-level mastery of the basic number facts, also called "the arithmetic tables". (ECU Tables Tester) .
Levels
There are five levels within the program:
Level 1 (Primary 1) is for Year 6 students. Schedule

There are two classes: one at 4 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m.
The classes are held fortnightly on Thursdays.
Level 2 (Primary 2) is for Year 7 students. Schedule
for 2008
There are two classes: one at 4 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m.
The classes are held fortnightly on Thursdays, alternate to those of
the Level 1 classes.
Level 3 (Euler) is for Year 8 students. Schedule
for 2008
There are two classes: one at 4 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m.
The classes are held weekly on Tuesdays.
Level 4 (Gauss) is for Year 9 students. Schedule
for 2008
The classes are held weekly at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Level 5 (Noether) is for Year 10 students. Schedule
for 2008
The classes are held weekly at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The Euler, Gauss and Noether levels are a part of the national program, Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians.
Program
The students are involved in a wide range of significant mathematical problem-solving activities. Each activity is explored to sufficient depth for students to appreciate the solution strategy involved and the process by which it is obtained. There is a consistent focus on effective presentation of solutions. This also provides a means of monitoring student progress. Further Details .
Achievement
Student participation and achievement is recognised through certificates presented at Presentation Functions held in August and November.
Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards
Students intending to apply for a place in the Edith Cowan University program should consider enrolling for the Australian Mathematics Competition. This competition is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust. Enrolments in it are made through the schools. In February of each year the Trust send invitations for participation to all schools. The closing date for applications is usually late April, and the Competition is held in late July or early August. For students in Years 3 to 6 the Competition is of 60 minutes duration. For students in Years 7 to 12 the Competition is of 75 minutes duration. There is a modest entry fee.
